Enric was born in Barcelona, in the sunny, industrious neighbourhood of Gracia, in April 1943, under the star sign of Taurus, in the year of the Goat. So here we have it, two sides of the same coin, the weighty “Bull” and the capricious “Goat”. He grew up amongst adults dressed in grey, carrying ration cards. But the nest was very warm, so of course, in spite of the usual obstacles he was a dear little thing. We’ll gloss over his childhood and adolescence: school, dreams of greatness, love and hope, strong emotions and new experiences. Because these are the common currency of youth. Suddenly, aged 20 in 1963, he’s trying to play guitar in a group called “The Sixteen Judges” (Els Setze Jutges) giving voice to “New Catalan Song” (La.Nova Cançó). His debut was at the Barcelona Faculty of Law with a song (unoriginally) entitled “The Mermaid” (La Sirena). He was greeted by silence, but was then astounded to hear applause. So the Goat went mad and began to sing. Over the next ten years he wrote some hundred songs which he traipsed all over Cataluña. There were also performances in Madrid, Zaragoza, Valencia, Baleares, París, Toulouse, Perpignan, Nice, Montpellier, Marseille, etc.… Recordings with EDIGSA (seven of those little 45’s of the period). June 1970 saw a series of concerts at the Barcelona Cine Alexis, director Joan de Sagarra, accompanied by Jordi Clúa on bass. A long period of working together and friendship followed, And it was at this time that the so-called “pocket concerts” were devised. March 1971 he performed at the Palau de la Música of Barcelona (agreeably surprised to see that the place was full). There was an LP of this concert. That same year, full of beans, he put on a show called “Enric’s Granny” (La Iaia de l’Enric), a mixture of song, text and sketches pulled together by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, directed by Mario Gas, sets by Fabiá Puiserver. At about this time some argentinian friends introduced him to the tango, and encouraged him to translate some into Catalan. This became an LP sung with Guillermina Motta and a spectacle “Tango” performed at “Martin’s” in Barcelona (January 1973). Director Mario Gas, overseen by Beto Compagnucci, sets by Fabiá Puigserver, musical director Joan Lluís Moraleda . The actor Biel Moll and dancers Cesc Gelabert, Pirjo Silfver, Matilde Muñiz, Ramon Ramis and Lisette Bable were part of the ensemble. The following year “Gaslight” was the venue for a repeat performance which became a short film also directed by Mario Gas. Meanwhile; Enric performed at a concert commemorating the closure of the “Price” (a legendary Barcelona boxing ring) with Maria del Mar Bonet and Ovidi Montllor (June 1972). In September of the same year he took part in the second festival of ”Six hours in Canet” But, as we were saying, having finished “Tango”, Taurus gave him a massive shove, the Goat sprang clear, and Enric orbited out of his centre of gravity (Barcelona) - landing in Menorca. His island retreat has yielded an LP “September Clouds” (Núvols de Setembre), a short film directed by Jordi Cadena produced by Pepón Coromina (S’Ullastrar), two further LP’s , “Rh+” (in Spanish) and “Four” (Quatre). In 2006 he made another comeback. Some journalist said “he’s like the Guadalquivir (river), long stretches appear and disappear”.
On 13th April 2007 the Catalan Parliament awarded him a medal of honour in recognition of his services to Catalan culture.
